“This children’s book examines a scientist’s experiment that shows the importance of a single species within an ecosystem.

In her latest science work for young readers, Quinlan (The Case of the Monkeys That Fell From the Trees, 2003, etc.), a wildlife biologist, writer, and artist, explains the important ecological research of Robert T. Paine (1933-2016). Interested in the intertidal zone ecosystem, the scientist studied Washington state tide pools and their characteristic sea life, including barnacles, mussels, sponges, algae, limpets, anemones, and more. He noticed that ochre sea stars were important predators in this system and wondered what the effect would be of removing them from their rocky shoreline habitat. An experiment to test this question led to startling results: “More than 26 species of anemones, chitons, urchins, limpets, whelks, and algae that had thrived in the lower intertidal zone no longer had space to live. They were completely crowded out by the mussels.” When the ochre sea stars were reintroduced, the ecosystem gradually recovered. The experiment proved that “keystone species,” to use Paine’s phrase, were crucial to the health of Washington’s tide pools.

Scientists studying other ecosystems also identified keystone species. Their work proved that the delicate balance of an ecosystem can be affected or even destroyed by just a single species’ disappearance. The author’s beautiful full-spread illustrations capture the atmosphere, variety, and splendor of Washington’s coast along with lovely depictions of sea life and other creatures. Without getting overly technical, Quinlan explains the sometimes-complicated concepts with clarity and energy. She gives readers a chance to see how a working scientist conducts experiments, conveying a sense of exploration, curiosity, and wonder at the interconnectedness of things. This is greatly bolstered by a section that provides capsule descriptions of other keystone species around the world, such as the northern flying squirrel, the little auk, the mound-building termite, and the African elephant, and why they’re crucial. For example, mound-building termites construct “extensive underground tunnels and farm fungi that break down wood and other plant material the termites gather. These actions enrich the soil with nutrients.”

“The beautiful illustrations in this remarkable explanation of one of the most important ecological studies of the 20th century really helps to bring the rocky intertidal ecosystem of the NW coast alive. The advanced vocabulary is perfect for middle and high school students, who don’t often get to read illustrated material. The illustrations really support the passages, which will inspire all readers to delve more deeply into the intricacies of the coastal ecosystem while offering reading support to English language learners. Younger readers will benefit from the glossary and the pages devoted to explaining the sea creatures. I loved the appendices, particularly the brief bird species descriptions with illustrations and the section on Crucial Connections Around the World. These will lead readers to think critically about ecosystems near their communities, and how one single species they are familiar with may be more important than they realize.

Science teachers will find this book particularly useful. Robert Paine’s controlled experiment with the Ochre sea stars that eventually coined the term “keystone species” is described, and students could analyze the experimental design, determining possible sources of error, deciding how to best control the variables, and how to measure the results. Energy and nutrient flows through the rocky intertidal ecosystem can be compared and contrasted with the ecosystems described in the appendix or with a local ecosystem. Students can be encouraged to put the “A” in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) by creating their own scientific illustrations.

On a side note, it would have been interesting to mention the sea star die off that started in 2013 from a virus that has impacted the rocky intertidal zone over a vast area (Alaska through Canada south to California and now into Mexico.) This sea star wasting syndrome will be Paine’s research project on a massive scale. Humans are studying many aspects of this disease, and have yet to discover the long-term results. Mentioning the current effects of climate change on the sea stars and the future of ALL ecosystems would have been an important contribution to the historical perspective.”

The story is based on a classic experiment by Dr. Robert T. Paine (“Bob” to his friends) that transformed the fields of ecology and environmental conservation. Vibrant, accurate illustrations of intertidal communities and habitats is combined with engaging and clear prose that first makes the intertidal zone come alive and then engages young readers in Bob’s quest to understand the interrelationships in those communities where sea stars are the major predator. The consequences of his sea star removal experiments reinforce understandings about the “who eats whom” of food webs and guide students into critical thinking about the implications of environmental changes that affect a single species with a keystone role in an ecosystem. This would be an excellent addition to marine education teaching resources for this age group as well as a wonderful gift to stimulate any young person’s interest in observing and caring about the natural world.

Understanding the consequences of the experimental removal of sea stars is especially relevant in Alaska and West Coast communities close to coastal areas where sea stars have been removed from intertidal areas by a widespread Sea Star Wasting Disease that may be connected to warmer water conditions in the ocean. But Quinlan also supplements the story about Paine’s intertidal research with other examples of keystone species that students may be more familiar with if they don’t live along the coast. The book also includes Paine’s biography, more information about coastal birds, and a glossary of scientific terms.

It’s especially noteworthy that Quinlan collaborated with Bob Paine and his family – both actual and by dint of scientific lineage – in writing and illustrating the book. A portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to an endowed fund created to extend Paine’s research by supporting ecological research by graduate students.”
